Does anyone know where I can get a new V1.11 ROM from? I'm in the UK. (Jon, Mon 17 Nov 11:01, Reply)
- mmt8 and esi4000
I've been having trouble trying to sequence my sampler. I have two mmt8s by the way. I have my midi controller connected to the midi in of the esi4000, with my sample banks setup with the corresponding notes. The I connect the midi out of the esi to the midi in of the mmt8 to record, but whenever I try to play it back nothing happens. I have the midi global settings on the esi set to channel 1 and the mmt8 set to record on all channels. It works great with my keyboards why not rackmounts? Thanks. (James, Mon 17 Nov 09:03, Reply)
You need to have the MIDI In on the ESI-4000 connected to the MIDI Out on the MMT-8. i.e. the chain should look like this: [Controller keyboard] MIDI Out -> MIDI In [MMT-8] MIDI Out -> MIDI In [ESI-4000] (Jon, Mon 17 Nov 10:57, Reply)

Oh - and don't connect the MIDI Out from the ESI-4000 to the MIDI In on the MMT-8. (, Mon 17 Nov 10:58, Reply)
And then to hear your ESI while you're playing the notes, press the MIDI ECHO button on the MMT8.

You could try SYX2MIDI converter: ------- http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Audio-Convertors/SYX2MIDI.shtml ---------
It's only for PC though.

thanks for that , i'm mac only but i'll look around in case there's something for us out there like it. (paul h , Fri 7 Nov 23:06, Reply)
- click for modular?
hi, when using the click out. can i use it as a clock out for a modular sequencer? (novielo, Thu 25 Sep 00:34, Reply)
I'd say it would work, similar to a Roland TR707 having a trigger output for the same thing. Cheers, (Graham, Thu 25 Sep 05:01, Reply)
thanks alot! (novielo, Fri 26 Sep 16:35, Reply)
- MMT8 service manual!!
I know that the MMT8 schematics have been on the net for a while now, but I have finally found where you can get the full 44 page service manual from. This has been a holy grail for mmt8 users. This guy sells them here, in pdf format, for a donation of $15 or more: ----- http://www.muzikelektronix.com/MEsmListing.txt ---------- He also has lots of other sevice manuals for other gear.

Just wanted to note that I made a dontation, and got a response the next day. I was emailed a very nice PDF of the MMT-8 service manual. Thanks for the tip Graham! (Matt, Mon 29 Sep 01:51, Reply)
- Power Adapter
Hi! Just bought MMT-8 w/o power adapter. Found one at home "AC-AC adapter ~220V -> ~9V 300 mA". When I switch the sequencer on - ALL the leds and the screen lights up and there's no "Alesis MMT-8" on the screen as it should be. When I plug in 9V DC adapter everything works fine, but the sequencer is very unstable and hangs up rapidly. So, what is the problem you think? The AC-AC adapter is fully working (it is from my home phone). I read FAQ here and found that MMT-8 needs 9V AC adapter 7VA. What is 7VA? 700mA? Is the problem in low current in my adapter? Thank you, guys! (Eugene Tongue, Sun 21 Sep 13:58, Reply)
Your AC pack might not have enough power to run it. 7VA means the total power output of the power pack = 9V x 0.77A = 7W (VA). So it needs a 9V AC supply of about 770mA current capability. In reality a 500mA pack should run it. The early model MMT8's will run off 9V DC as well as 9V AC if the polarity is the right way round. Yours must be an early one (grey?). Run it off DC if it works like you say. The instability probably means that it needs a slightly higher voltage power DC adapter, try a multi-voltage 500mA DC pack with a 9V and 12V switch. Try it on 9V and if no better, try it on 12V. It won't hurt the mmt8.

The MMT8 officially runs off a 10VAC, 700mA power pack, so your AC pack pobably isn't powerful enough. You can run it off DC though because the AC input gets converted to DC inside the MMT8 anyway. The 12V DC 800mA should be ok. Cheers, (Graham, Wed 24 Sep 02:50, Reply)
Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have a gray one. But isn't it better to use AC instead of DC for the unit anyway? Or it doesn't matter? I have a universal adapter (DC) and as it is written on it - it has 1000mV for 9V (i.e. 9 VA). The mmt8 is unstable anyway, but not so often (I was able to record 6 tracks for the part (~20 minutes) and the screen became full of random symbols). If I'll try 12V 800mA (9.6 VA)? Regards. - Power Adapter - Polarity
Hi. I have two MMT-8's - one with a 3.5mm power adapter tip (Model 41C-7 AC Adapter), and another instrument which receives a (more normal?) barrel-type tip adapter. Both instruments are grey, and I bought them when they first came out. I lost the adapter to the latter mmt-8 (the barrel-type tip_. I am going to try and find a replacement, but, is positive in the tip or on the outer barrel? It does not say on the MMT-8 case anywhere. THANKS. (Mick, Mon 17 Nov 13:45, Reply)
The original alesis power pack is a 9 or 10V AC power pack, 700mAH - meaning it puts out AC voltage, so it doesn't matter which terminal is +ve or -ve. Make sure you find one that says AC output, not DC (although some mmt8's WILL run off a DC 12V, 500mA power pack, with the tip +ve, barrel -ve hehe!! - your older one with the 3.5mm phone plug power pack will do this).

- Buttons+
I'm not plagues with naughty buttons... yet. They do act up from time to time, but I think its a problem with the studio environment. When it's warm around, they work as designed with no issues. When it's cold-ish, they need a little more 'coaxing' to get the contact to operate. Is it time for a cleaning?
-Also, I noticed my Play button Led lights up for a split second when pressing to start a seq, but shuts off immediately thereafter, it's not lit when playing. ??? (Mike T, Fri 19 Sep 22:19, Reply)
- 8x memory expansion
I decided to try this one. The ram chip in the guide is no longer available. I ordered Texas Instruments' replacement: BQ4015Y. They were like $27 each at digikey I think. That's a pretty penny. While working this, I noticed the pins were fragile and did not take to bending (as the guide calls for) well. I ended up easily breaking a pin. $27 mistake. I could see this happening again if I shell out the money for another one. Does anyone have a good idea for a replacement for the BQ4014Y that the guide calls for? I'm no stranger to soldering a project together but my knowledge of memory chips is lacking. Help a guy out. (jordan s, Wed 17 Sep 12:14, Reply)
Don't throw the chip away yet - just scrape back some of the plastic casing surrounding the broken leg stub and solder a wire to it - it still should be ok.
cheers, (Graham, Fri 19 Sep 03:00, Reply)
well, i took your advice and decided to go for it. stayed up extra late, got about 90% done. then two more pins simultaneously broke off. Making it 4 broken pins total. These chips are not worth the trouble. The pins and are extremely brittle and will not take any amount of bending. I will have to find some other way to do this. (jordan s, Fri 19 Sep 09:36, Reply)
You can leave them straight and just bend them out slightly so they miss the socket holes. Then you can solder the resistors and wires directly to them. It doesn't matter which way you do it; the only criteria is that the legs don't touch the other ones. Keep trying, it may seem like you've destroyed the chip but it will still be good. Take a breath and come back to it when you are not tired and give it another go. If it makes you feel better, I had similar experiences when trying it for the first time - really frustrating and demoralising - but once yuo see it fire up and working it will all be worth it.
Cheers, (Graham, Mon 22 Sep 02:48, Reply)
I just thought I'd mention that you don't have to bend the WHOLE leg up - you can bend it from where it suddenly goes skinny. Or if the leg doesn't go into a socket chip, like the ones that overhang, you don't have to touch them at all, so long as they don't touch other legs. Just solder the resistors or wires directly to the top of the leg's shoulders. Cheers, (Graham, Mon 22 Sep 05:42, Reply)
I've just updated the guides to instruct not to bend the legs up in case they break, there is now a revised way. Cheers, (Graham, Thu 25 Sep 02:45, Reply)
Which sram chips did you guys use? I've got 4015YMA-70 which are the replacements for the 4014YMA-85 that the guide calls for. I'm not even sure if they'll work properly. (jordan s, Tue 23 Sep 06:10, Reply)
Either chip will do - the 4014Y chip is for the 8x expansion, while the 4015Y is for the 16x expansion. Make sure you use the correct guide for the expansion size suited to whatever chip you have. They are slightly different in their layout. You can download the appropriate guide for each from the Yahoo MMT8 groups files section: ---- http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/MMT8/files/ ----- (Graham, Tue 23 Sep 08:49, Reply)
By the way, here is a cheaper chip. - Help your loved one stop smoking
My son knew he needed to stop smoking. He'd just seen his father die at 38 from lung cancer. That was the spark that made him realize that smoking could literally kill him. Unfortunately, every time he tried to stop, he would yield to temptation within a few days. I looked at using a nicotine patch and nicotine gum, but didn't want him to use either. For me, it seemed silly to take the same substance that causes the addiction - nicotine.
